Configure your office computer to allow Remote Desktop login.

Jump to your platform:

Setup Remote Desktop access in Windows 8

  1. Press Ctrl + F to open the Search menu, and look up remote.
  2. Click Settings and then Allow remote access to your computer.
    • Allow Remote Assistance connections… should be Unchecked
    • Click the radio button next to Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop
  3. Click Apply and OK.

Setup Remote Desktop access in Windows 7

  1. Click Start, then Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel, change View by: to Large Icons and find the System icon.
  3. In the System window, click on the Remote Settings link.
    • Allow Remote Assistance connections… should be Unchecked
    • Click the radio button next to Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop
  4. Click Apply and OK.
  5. Follow the instructions here to keep your computer from sleeping or hibernating so that it will be available to log into with Remote Desktop.

Setup Remote Desktop access in Windows Vista

  1. Click Start, then Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel, switch to Classic View and find the System icon.
  3. In the System Properties panel, go to the Remote tab:
    • Allow Remote Assistance connections… should be Unchecked
    • Click the radio button next to Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop
  4. Click Apply and OK.
  5. Follow the instructions here to keep your computer from sleeping or hibernating so that it will be available to log into with Remote Desktop.

Setup Remote Desktop access in Windows XP

  1. Click Start, then Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel, switch to Classic View and find the System icon.
  3. In the System Properties panel, go to the Remote tab:

    • Check the box for Allow users to connect remotely to this computer
  4. Follow the instructions here to keep your computer from sleeping or hibernating so that it will be available to log into with Remote Desktop.

Connecting to your work computer using Remote Desktop

  1. Connect to the VPN. Instructions can be found here.
  2. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, then click on Remote Desktop.

    Note: Remote Desktop may be under the folder Communications.
  3. In the Remote Desktop Connection panel, enter the full name of the computer.

    Example: UTDTagNumber.campus.ad.utdallas.edu

  4. Click Connect, then enter your NetID and Password when prompted.
